Easy five ingredient Nutella Rice Krispie treats with a Nutella Rice Krispie base, and a Nutella chocolate topping!

Rice Krispie treats

So a few weeks ago I decided to post my Biscoff Rice Krispie treats as you had all been asking and asking for them, and they went down SO well! So many of you have been making them that I really can’t keep up! This meant… as usual… more flavours!

I love baking with loads of different flavours all of the time – just look at my cheesecakes, I have made over seventy of them now and I have no intention of stopping any time soon! They do all base around the same base recipe however, and that’s what makes it so easy.

Nutella Rice Krispie treats

The Biscoff recipe worked so well because it’s just butter, marshmallows, biscoff spread and the Rice Krispies for the base… so, why wouldn’t that work with any other spread?! Answer – it does, and it’s insanely amazing. Oh my gosh amazing.

I thought I would post another recipe for this even though they are really similar, because you guys wanted me to. I went for Nutella this time because people are loving it, but you can use supermarket own brand Nutella, you can use a homemade nut spread… etc! Nutella is just an easily recognisable name for the theme of the bake.

Nutella

The Nutella comes through strong enough from the bake to make sure you get the Nutella theme, but not too much that you lose the texture and idea of the rice Krispie treat. However, this is why I put Nutella on the top of the bake as well… who doesn’t want more Nutella in their lives?!

Nutella has always been a hit on my blog with my Nutella cheesecake, my version of the three ingredient Nutella brownies, and so on… it just doesn’t stop! I love the chocolatey nutty flavour so much it’s mad. However, if you can’t have nuts or don’t like them – simply swap the Nutella for a plain chocolate spread!

Ingredient alternatives

In the UK at least, we have Maltesers spread, Crunchie spread, M&M spread… etc! They would all work perfectly in place of the Nutella. You just need to make sure that when you are making the rice krispie base of the butter and marshmallows, to take it off the heat before you add the spread. If the spread gets too hot it can split!

You can swap the rice krispies to cocoa pops if you want something more chocolatey, or you can even swap to a different cereal altogether such as cornflakes, cheerios and so on! A no-bake treat is always so adaptable and I love it. Pretty sure adaptable is my new favourite word at this rate with the amount of times I write it on my recipes! Anyway…

Base

The base recipe of the butter, marshmallows, Nutella and rice pops is enough to be a delicious and easy treat to make! It does get sticky, so a top tip is to slightly butter your hands or spatula to prevent it sticking when you are pushing the mix down.. but thats up to you!

Topping

The topping of these Nutella Rice Krispie treats is completely optional – but I love it. I love to swirl the chocolate and the Nutella together, but you can swap up the chocolate you use – or not use any at all. The chocolate does help make the top of this no-bake treat firmer, but its up to you! Have fun making these – enjoy! X

Ingredients

Base

  • 50 g unsalted butter
  • 225 g mini marshmallows (I used white)
  • 175 g Nutella
  • 175 g Rice Krispies

Topping

  • 200 g Nutella
  • 200 g white chocolate (or milk/dark)

Instructions

  • Line a 9x9" square tin with parchment paper, and leave to the side.
  • Add the butter and mini marshmallows to a large pan, and heat on a low-medium heat, stiring, untill smooth and melted!
  • Once melted, take the pan off the heat and add in the nutella. Stir briefly until smooth!
  • Pour the Rice Krispies into the pan, and stir to combine!
  • Press the mixture into the bottom of the lined tin (top tip, buttering your hands slightly can prevent any sticking and makes it easy to press down!)
  • Melt the chocolate in a bowl until smooth - I do this in short bursts in the microwave stiring well each time.
  • In a separate bowl, melt the nutella slightly to make the swirling easier - this takes about 20 seconds in the microwave.
  • Pour the two over the rice krispie base and swirl together with a cake skewer.
  • Set in the fridge for two or more hours, and then slice and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can use slightly salted butter it you want the mixture slightly less sweet!
  • If your mixture splits, try adding in a small amount of milk to bring it back.
  • You can use any spread in place of the Nutella if you would rather use something else!
  • You can use cocoa pops in place of rice krispies if you want!
  • The chocolate topping can be done with dark, milk or white chocolate - anything you fancy!
  • Store at room temperature for up to five days!

ENJOY!

My 1st batch are currently setting in the fridge. I found it really tough to mix the rice crispys into the melted mix so had to get stuck in with my hands. The marshmallows were thoroughly melted. Any ideas what I done wrong?

Do you think you could freeze this recipe?

Wanting to make a few bits for Christmas hampers and wondering if I can do things ahead of time.

    • Jane's Patisserie on November 26, 2020 at 3:26 pm

Yeah I’d say so! They can be sticky obviously though so if you are layering in a tub just put a bit of parchment in-between x

  15. Tina Osmond on October 26, 2020 at 11:06 pm

I would love to make these for the grandkids but I need cup measurements. Is there someone who can convert the measurements for me?

  16. Michelle on October 25, 2020 at 3:45 pm

These look amazing but I am clueless with converting the gram measurements, I bake by ounces, tablespoon, cups, etc. Has anyone converted the measurements with success and could help me out? Thank you!

    • Sarah on December 19, 2020 at 2:07 pm

Under the recipe there’s an option to change the measurements to ounces. Would that help?

    • Angie on November 15, 2021 at 6:05 pm

Anyone get an answer for converted measurements? Need in cup measurements please

Hi Jane! I was told by a couple of people that they didn’t like the thick topping on the top and the bottom was too plain. Is there any technique on coating all of the krispies without the marshmallow stiffening too much? It was such a pain covering everything 😛

    • Jane's Patisserie on October 8, 2020 at 9:43 am

I have a video of this on my TikTok and it literally is just about working it – you can always add less, but Rice Krispie treats aren’t meant to be heavy on the marshmallow it’s just meant to bind it all! And I always thought a thick topping was good?! xx

  19. Shona on September 29, 2020 at 4:07 pm

I’m wondering if I could use something else instead of marshmallows? I don’t have any at home and avoiding the shops as much as possible?

    • Jane's Patisserie on September 29, 2020 at 6:00 pm

These really are designed for the marshmallows unfortunately – without you need to look at my rocky road type bakes!

  20. Debbie on September 17, 2020 at 4:04 pm

Could you use carnation caramel instead of Nutella?

    • Jane's Patisserie on September 17, 2020 at 7:39 pm

No I wouldn’t recommend that xx

Just wondering, can you not use Nutella for the base, or do you think it wouldn’t taste good?
    Thanks x

    • Jane's Patisserie on September 15, 2020 at 7:52 pm

It would just taste a bit plain, but if you don’t mind that it would be alright!

  23. Charlotte on September 14, 2020 at 11:07 am

    Hi Jane,

Could you use large size marshmallows instead of mini ones? Thanks 🙂

    • Jane's Patisserie on September 14, 2020 at 1:30 pm

Yes, just make sure to melt them down properly x

  24. Katie Geraghty on September 13, 2020 at 4:33 pm

Hi Jane! These look amazing! Any ideas on how to make them vegetarian? I’ve read on your biscoff version of these that someone tried veggie marshmallows instead but it didn’t go to plan. Any ideas will be much appreciated! 🙂

    • Jane's Patisserie on September 13, 2020 at 10:00 pm

I’m afraid I have only used regular marshmallows, but it may also be the type of veggie ones they used.. The only other way is to do a white chocolate style base like my biscoff rocky road!

    • nicky on April 22, 2021 at 9:38 pm

I make these with the freedom vegan marshmallows – you can get on amazon or holland and Barrett . works really well

  25. Screenname 1994 on September 13, 2020 at 11:25 am

Hi Jane, do you think this would work with veggie marshmallows?

    • Jane's Patisserie on September 13, 2020 at 10:01 pm

I have not tried it with them before, but as long as they can melt in the same way it should do!

    • Sarah-louise on March 13, 2022 at 7:22 pm

Hi 😊 I need to make 25 treats for my daughters brownie class. Would these keep ok if I made them the night before? I was thinking these might be easier to store than cupcakes etc 🤔. Thankyou!

    • Jane's Patisserie on March 23, 2022 at 11:18 am

Yes absolutely they will! Keep them in an airtight container. Enjoy! x

  26. Rachael on September 12, 2020 at 2:21 pm

    Great recipie as always!

  27. Vicky Ellis on September 12, 2020 at 1:22 pm

Would you recommend cutting it with a warm knife?

    • Jane's Patisserie on September 12, 2020 at 9:02 pm

I never heat my knives as I don’t find it any easier personally, but its up to you. You just need a long sharp knife x
