Welcome to my blog post about my favourite pieces of baking equipment that I use when I am decorating all of my bakes!

So I decided that after the success of my other blog posts – my favourite baking appliances, and my favourite food colourings, that I would do another one! This time, it is my favourite baking equipment! This post is about all of the pieces of equipment I use every week, and often I use most of them every day!

I have, along side so many other bakers, SO MANY PIECES OF EQUIPMENT in my kitchen, and I have discovered what I love more than other stuff throughout the years – so I thought I would list it all for you here! I often get questions on what I use anyway, so I thought this is an easy post for you all to refer to if you ever wonder!

Equipment can vary depending on what part of the baking process you are in, so I have utensils, bowls, when you are baking, cake decorating, after baking and baking cups & liners within this post, but if there is anything missing off that you are wondering about – comment below!! x

UTENSILS

Spatulas – Spatulas are probably one of my most used utensils EVER.. and I just can’t possibly have enough of them in my kitchen at any one time. I use at least 20 spatulas a day when I am developing recipes and you would be silly to not have many as well!

Cookie scoops – cookie scoops, ice cream scoops, whatever you want to call them… I love them. I use 5cm cookie scoops ALL of the time for my cookies, also to portion cupcake batter into a baking cup, and when I am just eating ice cream

Measuring Spoons – these are some of the most important things you can have in a kitchen, as I use them for baking, cooking, and so on. I love this shape measuring spoon because they fit more easily into pots, and you can easily level them out.

Cake Testers – one of the most important things I think anyone can use in cake baking, and I have many. Some people insert a knife into their bakes to test them, but in my opinion, you shouldn’t – you need a smaller surface area tester such as these cake testers

Pastry Brush – I think these are the sort of utensils that can be forgotten about – and yet I use mine all the time. You can get silicone ones as I have in the spatula set above, or you can get this style – these are definitely my favourite.

Citrus Juicer – This one may be a bit more niche, but worth it still in my opinion. I find it the easiest to use and control compared to the ones you press down on – and I love it

Grater – I obviously use a grater quite a lot when baking – and whilst this one may be slightly better for grating something such as carrot, this one is the best for everything else – grated citrus fruits, grating nutmeg etc… I am obsessed.

Whisks – I think a balloon whisk is extremely underrated sometimes, and it is often easier to use compared to using an electric mixer. I use my balloon whisk often to whip my cream for my cheesecake decoration and it’s just so quick and easy!

Rolling Pin – obviously a key part in any kitchen… whether you are decorating a cake, making scones, making cinnamon rolls etc… a rolling pin should be in every single kitchen!

BOWLS & JUGS

Pyrex bowls – This may seem like a silly thing to list, but honestly… these are so good! I always use these bowls in my videos when I am making recipes to mix stuff in, and the varying sizes are so useful! I have used them for years, and will always be obsessed.

Measuring bowls – Also when making my videos, or even just baking… I like to weigh out my ingredients. I use a mixture of large glass bowls, medium glass bowls and small glass bowls and I love them. It makes life so much easier if you pre-weigh your ingredients into these sort of bowls!

Pyrex jugs – These are something I use often for measuring, but also for what I make my ganache drips in, for when I am melting chocolate… and so on! They are obviously also SO useful for measuring liquids for recipes.

Ceramic bowls – I have a mixture of mason cash bowls in my equipment, because they are beautiful, and heavy duty. I love them – and they can come in such big sizes, which is great when making things like rocky road as you need a lot of mixing space!

WHEN BAKING

Sugar/Jam thermometer – Often something I recommend to use… a sugar thermometer. They are super useful when you are making classic fudge recipes, jam, and so on! They usually clip onto your pan as well so you don’t have to hold them!

Thermometer – a general thermometer is also really really useful – I use these if I want to make things and test the temperature quickly, but also I use this thermometer often when cooking because it really is so good!

Oven thermometer – Something I recommend ALL OF THE TIME. I say about these over and over and over because I want to make sure your cakes are baking as good as they possibly can… and an oven thermometer is the way to go! Some ovens can be out by 50ºc sometimes, so it’s worth it!

Weighing scales – I feel like this is an obvious one… but weighing scales. I cannot stress the importance enough of using weighing scales to make sure that your ingredients are measured correctly! I use this set of scales at the moment and I love them!

Bulldog clips – A handy trick when you are prepping a bake – clip the parchment paper to the sides of the tin (such as when making millionaires shortbread) and the paper won’t budge! SO much easier!

Sieves – Something that everyone should have in their baking cupboard… a sieve. No, I don’t sieve too many things, but these are ESSENTIAL when making bakes such as macarons. You need to sieve those ingredients!

BAKING CUPS & LINERS

Baking cups – MY FAVOURITE THINGS EVER! If you have followed me for a while, you know I am utterly obsessed with baking cups. There are spotty ones, plain ones, stripy ones, and so on… I love baking cups. I use them all of the time as I love them!

Muffin cases – I love tulip muffin cases the most because they are just beautiful – but you can use regular muffin cases too. I just love anything muffin size!

Cupcake cases – if you don’t want to go down the baking cup route, I recommend cupcake cases like these… because they bake well! Some cupcake cases really don’t bake well (poor quality!) which is unfortunate, but I do love these ones.

Round parchment circles – This maaaay seem lazy… but they are worth it. I bake so many 8″ cakes, I just whack these straight in the tins and save myself a tonne of time.

Baking tray parchment – I am just obsessed with these too, I won’t lie. They are perfect for my large baking trays!

Parchment/Greaseproof – not something I ever really though about before, but the amount of questions I get about this! I always use the same brand as I find it by far the best, and it really is so good! I promise!

AFTER BAKING

Cooling rack – probably something every baker in the world has in their cupboards right?! You need to cool your bakes correctly guys, it will help so much!

Cake leveller – These are necessarily essential, but when people ask ‘how are you cakes so level?’ this is why! They are easy to use, and the best way to get a perfectly level cake.

Clingfilm – again, a weird one to suggest… but I love this clingfilm. It’s worth it for when you have to let bread proof, when you are wrapping your cakes for freezing, etc!

Foil – same as above – so so useful for when you are baking/cooking, and when you are freezing cakes! I tend to double wrap my cakes in clingfilm, and then wrap in foil

CAKE DECORATING

Offset spatula/Palette knife – These are SO IMPORTANT. I cannot stress this enough… I use these all of the time. I have at least 5 in my drawer at any one time because I am always using them. They are great to use to spread buttercream, chocolate, ganache etc! Little palette knives (for or offset spatulas as some people call them) are great!

Small cake scraper – I will bang on and on about cake scrapers until the end of my cake decorating days, because I need them all of the time. They are so useful for spreading and making a cheesecake top even, or starting a crumb coat for a cake! They are the dream.

Large cake scraper – when I want to make a full drip cake, a large metal cake scraper is all I ever want. The metal part of it is useful, as you can heat the scraper to get a smoother finish on your cakes, but also, the sharp 90º edge to the scraper helps endlessly when decorating cakes!

Turntable – One of the most important things for cake decorating… a turntable. They are practically vital if you want to have a perfectly smooth edge to your cake, because the moving of the cake along with your scraper is essential. They are just also useful for decorating anything else!

Cake dowels – Not that I have posted many stacked cakes on my blog… but dowels are so important. If you want to make a tiered cake, you MUST STACK WITH DOWELS. If you don’t, your cakes may sink awfully!
